Attempts to lift the siege hy forces sent overland would be too difficult and costly, hut the British War Office hit on a bold plan: it would send a strong force of soldiers, sailors and marines up the Nile to attack the fanatical Mahdi and his army of dervishes surrounding Khartoum.
