Literacy is not a handy knack. It is a moral condition. The ability to read attentively, reflectively, and judiciously is equally the ability to be attentive, reflective, and judicious. For the sake of just and sane living, literacy is not an optional adornment. It is a necessity. It is the necessity. It is not a variety or portion of education. It is education. It is the whole thing, the wholesome nourishment of the mind, by which it may grow strong enough to be the master of the will and not its slave, the judge of desire and not its procurer, the censor of sentiment and not its tool, and the inquisitor of belief, and not its flack. It is our only path to whatever wisdom we can have, which is our only path to whatever goodness we can know, which is our only path to whatever happiness we can enjoy.

Elizaveta Denisovna Voronyanskaya (died September 1973) was an assistant of the Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and typist for the manuscript of his book The Gulag Archipelago (1973), a history of the Gulag forced-labour camps in the Soviet Union.

The manuscript had been smuggled out of the Soviet Union on microfilm and was ready for publication in New York and Paris, but Solzhenitsyn had wished for first publication within the Soviet Union. His plans were upset by the KGB, who tortured Voronyanskaya and uncovered the hiding place of the manuscript. Voronyanskaya was then found hanged in her apartment, allegedly as a result of suicide. Solzhenitsyn went ahead with publication, and a Russian-language edition of the book was published in Paris on 26 December 1973.

Solzhenitsyn was arrested on 12 February 1974 and deported to Germany. He lived in exile in the West until his return to Russia two decades later.

We so much take for granted our freedoms never understanding the price paid by so many to have freedoms. There are litanies of sick, demented dogs lying in wait to torture and murder for the thought crime. Guard your right to free speech well. It is the tempest and the storm to combat adversity.

The Gulag Archipelago: An Experiment in Literary Investigation is a three-volume, non-fiction text written between 1958 and 1968 by Russian writer and historian Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It was first published in 1973, followed by an English translation the following year. It covers life in what is often known as the gulag, the Communist Soviet forced labour camp system, through a narrative constructed from various sources including reports, interviews, statements, diaries, legal documents, and Solzhenitsyn's own experience as a gulag prisoner. In Russian, the term GULAG is an acronym for Main Directorate of Camps.

Following its publication, the book initially circulated in samizdat underground publication in the Soviet Union until its appearance in the literary journal Novy Mir in 1989, in which a third of the work was published in three issues. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, The Gulag Archipelago has been officially published in Russia. An abridged fiftieth anniversary edition was released on 1 November 2018 with a new foreword by Jordan Peterson.

Be first or be dead...there is no seconc place winner in a gunfight. The subject of this book is the ways and means to survive and stay alive in just such an event. Primarily written as a law enforcement handbook, many of the applications and techniques could apply to any one in a confrontation that escalates to a fire fight with guns. Bill Jordan is a well known and respected retired Federal Agent.

William Henry "Bill" Jordan (1911?1997) was an American lawman, United States Marine and author.

    Biography

Born in 1911 in Louisiana, he served for over 30 years with the U.S. Border Patrol. He also served as a US Marine during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve as a colonel.

Jordan is credited with developing the 'Jordan' or 'Border Patrol' style of holster. The Jordan rig is rigid and unmoving, always holding the gunbutt in precisely the same relationship to the gun hand. The revolver's trigger guard is completely exposed, and the gun is held away from the back portion of the holster by a plug of leather, allowing the trigger finger to enter the guard as the draw is begun.

Jordan also collaborated with Walter Roper in the design of wooden grips intended for heavy-calibre double-action revolvers, which are now made by Herrett's Stocks as the "Jordan Trooper". Jordan always favored a double-action revolver for law enforcement duties. He was largely responsible for convincing Smith & Wesson to adapt its medium K-frame series revolver to accommodate the .357 Magnum cartridge, resulting in the (S&W Model 19 and S&W Model 66) "Combat Magnum".

After retiring from the Border Patrol, Jordan served as a Southwestern Field Representative for the National Rifle Association. He was a contemporary of Charles Askins, Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton and to a lesser degree, Jack O'Connor. In 1963, Jordan assisted Keith and Skelton in development of the .41 Magnum. He wrote numerous articles on all aspects of firearms, as well as books such as No Second Place Winner, Mostly Huntin' and Tales of the Rio Grande. Jordan was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan.

Using a double-action revolver, Bill Jordan was recorded drawing, firing and hitting his target in .27 of a second. He appeared on such television programs as To Tell the Truth, I've Got a Secret, You Asked for It, and Wide Wide World.[1] Bill Jordan died in 1997.

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong is a 1995 book by James W. Loewen, a sociologist. It critically examines twelve popular American high school history textbooks and concludes that the textbook authors propagate false, Eurocentric and mythologized views of American history. In addition to his critique of the dominant historical themes presented in high school textbooks, Loewen presents themes that he says are ignored by traditional history textbooks.

    Themes

In Lies My Teacher Told Me, Loewen criticizes modern American high school history textbooks for containing incorrect information about people and events such as Christopher Columbus, the lies and inaccuracies in the history books regarding the dealings between the Europeans and the Native Americans, and their often deceptive and inaccurate teachings told about America's commerce in slavery. He further criticizes the texts for a tendency to avoid controversy and for their "bland" and simplistic style. He proposes that when American history textbooks elevate American historical figures to the status of heroes, they unintentionally give students the impression that these figures are superhumans who live in the irretrievable past. In other words, the history-as-myth method teaches students that America's greatest days have already passed. Loewen asserts that the muting of past clashes and tragedies makes history boring to students, especially groups excluded from the positive histories.

  • Principles of War

Principles of war are rules and guidelines that represent truths in the practice of war and military operations.

The earliest known principles of war were documented by Sun Tzu, circa 500 BCE. Machiavelli published his "General Rules" in 1521 which were themselves modeled on Vegetius' Regulae bellorum generales (Epit. 3.26.1-33). Henri, Duke of Rohan established his "Guides" for war in 1644. Marquis de Silva presented his "Principles" for war in 1778. Henry Lloyd proffered his version of "Rules" for war in 1781 as well as his "Axioms" for war in 1781.Then in 1805, Antoine-Henri Jomini published his "Maxims" for War version 1, "Didactic Resume" and "Maxims" for War version 2. Carl von Clausewitz wrote his version in 1812 building on the work of earlier writers.

There are no universally agreed-upon principles of war.

    Carl von Clausewitz

The principles of war identified by Carl von Clausewitz in his essay Principles of War,[2] and later enlarged in his book, On War have been influential on military thinking in the North Atlantic region.

The initial essay dealt with the tactics of combat, and suggested the following general principles:

discover how we may gain a preponderance of physical forces and material advantages at the decisive point,to calculate moral factors, make the best use of the few means at our disposal'never lack calmness and firmness...without this firm resolution, no great results can be achieved in the most successful war, always have the choice between the most audacious and the most careful solution...no military leader has ever become great without audacity

Based on the above, Clausewitz went on to suggest principles for tactics, the scale of combat that dominated European warfare at the time:

    The Defence

    The Offense

    The Use of Troops

    The Use Of Terrain

forces are more effective in a concentric rather than in a parallel attack; attack concentrically without having decisive superiority in an engagement

always seek to envelop that part of the enemy against which we direct our main attack

cut off the enemy from his line of retreat

Clausewitz also included in the essay general principles of strategy by saying that Warfare has three main objects:

    (a) To conquer and destroy the armed power of the enemy; always direct our principal operation against the main body of the enemy army or at least against an important portion of his forces

    (b) To take possession of his material and other sources of strength, and to direct our operations against the places where most of these resources are concentrated

    (c) To gain public opinion, won through great victories and the occupation of the enemy's capital

use our entire force with the utmost energy, the decisive point of attack, never to waste time, surprise plays a much greater role in tactics than in strategy, pursuit, forces concentrated at the main point

an attack on the lines of communication takes effect only very slowly, while victory on the field of battle bears fruit immediately

In strategy, therefore, the side that is surrounded by the enemy is better off than the side which surrounds its opponent, especially with equal or even weaker forces

To cut the enemy's line of retreat, however, strategic envelopment or a turning movement is very effective be physically and morally superior stores of supplies, on whose preservation operations absolutely depend

The provisioning of troops is a necessary condition of warfare and thus has great influence on the operations

    independent action

    Strategic Defense

Politically speaking defensive war is a war which we wage for our independence

    Strategic Offense

The strategic offensive pursues the aim of the war directly, aiming straight at the destruction of the enemy's forces

I found this very interesting old TV show. I picked this episode at random. Soldiers across Europe looked into the sky and saw what they thought was a flare. It was a light apparition. They lost the will to fight. They entered a state of mind in a past Utopia. The point is it was a true story that found 1,000 soldiers experience the same thing. It was printed in the Rosicrucian magazine Rays From the Rose Cross in November 1915. They say Constantine saw a vision that led him to battle. Perhaps it was meant the other way.

At 10 p.m. on February 13-14, 1945, the Master Bomber broadcast the cryptic order: 'Controller to Plate-Rack Force: Come in and bomb glow of red T.I.s as planned.' The ill-famed R.A.F. attack on Dresden had begun. The target city was among Germany's largest, but had little military or industrial value. It was a center for the evacuation of wounded servicemen, and schools, restaurants, and public buildings had been converted into hospitals.

The authorities expected that this, a city often compared with Florence for its graceful Baroque style, would be spared. By 1945 the legend was deeply entrenched that Dresden would never be bombed. It was not to be. In February 1945 with the war's political and military directors meeting at Yalta, Mr Winston Churchill urgently needed some display of his offensive strength and of his willingness to assist the Russians in their drive westwards. Dresden just seven miles behind the eastern Front, became the victim of Mr Churchill's desire for a spectacular 'shattering blow'. As things turned out this, the most crushing air-raid of the war, was not delivered until the Yalta conference ended.

The city was undefended - even the Luftwaffe night fighter force was grounded. There were no proper air raid shelters. Dresden was housing hundreds of thousands of refugees from Silesia, East Prussia, and western Germany, in addition to its own population of 630,000 Up to a hundred thousand people, perhaps more, were killed in two or three hours, burned alive, that night. Yet until the first edition of this book appeared in 1963 the raid scarcely figured in the Allied war histories. A veil had been drawn across this tragedy.

Stung by foreign revulsion at this new St Valentine's Day massacre, the British prime minister - who had ordered it - penned an angry minute to his Chief of Staff, even before the war ended, rasping that 'the destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of allied bombing'. It is from this remarkably forgetful minute that the sub-title of this documentary account is taken. For the first time the full story, omitting nothing, of the history.

    From The Anglo-American Establishment

"One wintry afternoon in 1891, three men were engaged in earnest conversation in London. From that conversation were to flow consequences of the greatest importance to the British Empire and to the world as a whole. For these men were organizing a secret society that was, for more than 50 years, to be one of the most important forces in the formulation and execution of British imperial and foreign policy.

The three men thus engaged were already well known in England. The leader was Cecil Rhodes, fabulously wealthy empire builder and the most important person in South Africa. The second was William T. Stead, the most famous, and probably also the most sensational, journalist of the day. The third was Reginald Baliol Brett, later known as Lord Esher, friend and confidant of Queen Victoria, and later to be the most influential adviser of King Edward VII and King George V."

"The Machine Stops" is a science fiction short story (12,300 words) by E. M. Forster. After initial publication in The Oxford and Cambridge Review (November 1909), the story was republished in Forster's The Eternal Moment and Other Stories in 1928. After being voted one of the best novellas up to 1965, it was included that same year in the populist anthology Modern Short Stories. In 1973 it was also included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two.

The story, set in a world where humanity lives underground and relies on a giant machine to provide its needs, predicted technologies such as instant messaging and the Internet.

    Plot summary

The story describes a world in which most of the human population has lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual now lives in isolation below ground in a standard room, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Travel is permitted, but is unpopular and rarely necessary. Communication is made via a kind of instant messaging/video conferencing machine with which people conduct their only activity: the sharing of ideas and what passes for knowledge.

The two main characters, Vashti and her son Kuno, live on opposite sides of the world. Vashti is content with her life, which, like most inhabitants of the world, she spends producing and endlessly discussing secondhand 'ideas'. Kuno, however, is a sensualist and a rebel. He persuades a reluctant Vashti to endure the journey (and the resultant unwelcome personal interaction) to his room. There, he tells her of his disenchantment with the sanitised, mechanical world.

He confides to her that he has visited the surface of the Earth without permission, and that he saw other humans living outside the world of the Machine. However, the Machine recaptures him, and he is threatened with 'Homelessness': expulsion from the underground environment and presumed death. Vashti, however, dismisses her son's concerns as dangerous madness and returns to her part of the world.

As time passes, and Vashti continues the routine of her daily life, there are two important developments. First, the life support apparatus required to visit the outer world is abolished. Most welcome this development, as they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand experience and of those who desire it. Secondly, "Technopoly", a kind of religion, is re-established, in which the Machine is the object of worship. People forget that humans created the Machine, and treat it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their own.

Those who do not accept the deity of the Machine are viewed as 'unmechanical' and threatened with Homelessness. The Mending Apparatus—the system charged with repairing defects that appear in the Machine proper—has also failed by this time, but concerns about this are dismissed in the context of the supposed omnipotence of the Machine itself.

During this time, Kuno is transferred to a room near Vashti's. He comes to believe that the Machine is breaking down, and tells her cryptically "The Machine stops." Vashti continues with her life, but eventually defects begin to appear in the Machine. At first, humans accept the deteriorations as the whim of the Machine, to which they are now wholly subservient, but the situation continues to deteriorate, as the knowledge of how to repair the Machine has been lost.

Finally, the Machine collapses, bringing 'civilization' down with it. Kuno comes to Vashti's ruined room. Before they perish, they realise that humanity and its connection to the natural world are what truly matter, and that it will fall to the surface-dwellers who still exist to rebuild the human race and to prevent the mistake of the Machine from being repeated.

1978: Operation Mind Control by Walter Bowart

The book is out of print, but a “Researchers Edition“ (2nd ed. 1994) is online. Walter Bowart was the first author to argue that the U.S. government conducted covert psychological experiments on unwitting Americans; he did so armed with key documents he had obtained under FOIA.

Bowart coined the name “Cryptocracy” a compound of “crypto”, meaning “secret,” and “cracy,” meaning “rule, government, governing body.”

“The ‘cryptocracy’ then is the secret government whose identity and whereabouts have slowly and reluctantly been hinted at by the Congress through its investigations into Watergate, the CIA, and the rest of the intelligence community. . . The cryptocracy invades the privacy of citizens and corporations. It meddles, often violently, in the internal politics of foreign countries, and has hired, trained, and equipped mind-controlled assassins for the murder of heads of state. . . . The story within the story, I discovered, is an astonishing one of a psychological war waged by the U.S. cryptocracy against the American people.”

This Cryptocracy, he argues, has waged a psychological war against the American people, by invading the privacy of citizens and corporations, and meddling, often violently, in the internal politics of foreign nations using trained mind-controlled assassins for the murder of heads of state. Bowart notes that the CIA is near the top of the pyramid, but it is not alone.

Richard Condon, author of the (fictional) Manchurian Candidate (1959) wrote the forward to Bowart’s book in 1977:

“. . .the American secret police has endowed hundreds of scientist at American universities to unravel methods for fracturing American minds. . .this research in so many great halls of learning has exceeded a cost of untold secret millions of dollars. . .indicates that this Grockian entertainment being produced by our secret police is a matter of ambitious policy rather than the happenchance of cloak-and-dagger adventure.”

“In this book W.H. Bowart has proven each step of this official, terminal, government anarchy even though that appears to be a contradiction in terms. To alter and control human minds is the ultimate anarchy. What is offered by official apologists as a tribute to the deeds of daring-do by romantic spies are acts of hatred and sadism against all people in an insane and degraded determination to extirpate conscience from society.”

“. . . the astonishing information published in this seminal work of investigative reporting, concerning avenues taken to decision and execution by our secret police to fracture or dissolve human minds, then to operate a Yo-Yo, for purposes of counter-intelligence military ‘efficiency,’ and the destruction of democratic institutions, was drawn directly from federal records and from official laboratory archives of the highest educational purpose — as well as from the reviving memories of those who had already undergone the dehumanizing process.”

“The prostitution of the mind by our secret police preceded the murder of the mind. The advanced techniques now available to ‘magnetic and attractive’ political personalities, it was necessary to turn out the laboratories of science as a pimp turns out his heartless whores upon the winter streets; our hallowed educators, army and navy and air force commanders and personnel, the beloved medical profession, august and inspiring temples of the law, our esteemed statesmen, and all Americans living and dead. Each one of those groups is involved in this dismembering of the mind.”

“‘Brainwashing’ per se is no news to any of us. Controlled assassins are not known to us only through fiction. Advertising assaults on behalf of poisonous materials to induce us successfully to buy and consume are early on bastions of mind control.”

“No one — not anyone — needs theologians to answer the question: ‘Where does the soul live?’ We know the soul lives in the mind because the soul is the mind of intent, of hope, of purpose, of achievement by the spirit beyond achievement by physical action.”

“W.H. Bowart’s book is also a freezing vision of the mutations of the aspirations of science. Scientists, educators, and their leaders, The Great Men, Having stumbled upon the possibility of controlling the human mind might well have withheld this knowledge from the secret police and brought it forward for all to share, would you not say? If the means are at hand actually to enter and control the mind — not through the far-off smoke signals of psychiatry and psychoanalysis — can we conceive of what might be found in terms of medical triumphs, the conquest of pain and of group hatreds, and mental energy released by unraveling the Garden knots of mental perplexity. . .

“The question the book puts is this: do you wish this immeasurably important technique to remain as a weapon to be used against you and your children by what Bowart calls the Cryptocracy, or do you wish to use it as a universal key to unlock a thousand new chances that your children will not be murdered in future wars? Today our secret police and our military establishment have demonstrated [ . . .] the powers to create assassins out of our children. The expansion of these powers, which are able to turn young men and women into murderous criminals at will, goes on unchecked by the oft-called ‘investigative’ press, by ‘morals at the bar, in the pulpits, in high government, and on campuses.

“Zombie is a quaint, old- fashioned folklore word which [. . .] becomes obscene when our children’s minds are being controlled by any one of dozens of federal secret police agencies. The murders of a few hundred humans by a few hundred other humans is commonplace enough but, for the flavor of horror and terror, of endless nightmare rampant upon a landscape of what was once American democracy, consider this expansion of the Brzezinski epigraph which cannot be repeated often enough: ‘In the technetronic society the trend would seem to be toward the aggregation of the individual support of millions of uncoordinated citizens, easily within the reach of magnetic and attractive personalities, effectively exploiting the latest communications techniques to manipulate emotion and control reason.’”

Walter Bowart calls attention to the fact that the scientific reports, CIA documents, and histories of CIA’s mind control projects, ignore almost entirely the human factor. “There is no written record of the mental anguish, the torture to the soul that comes from loss of memory and the resulting identity crisis. That mental anguish is the story of mind control.” In his book, Bowart tells the stories told by the “failures” of Operation Mind Control — “failures because the victims remember something; for where mind control is successful there is no memory left.”

Skolnick was a court reformer, and from 1969 to 1993 alone, twenty judges and over forty attorneys went behind bars as a result of Skolnick's public exposure of their crimes. In 1963 he founded the Citizen's Committee to Clean Up the Courts, a public interest group researching and disclosing certain instances of judicial bribery and political murders. From 1995 on, he was producer/moderator of "BROADSIDES," a one-hour weekly taped public access Chicago Cable TV Show that reached an audience of 400,000 viewers. Judges on the take, some of them termed "banksters" or "banker-judges," drew the attention not only of Skolnick's seasoned Jewish humor but also of his relentless and feared public exposure mechanisms. Since 2003, the learned Skolnick found a home for the last years of his investigative reporting in the Toronto-based internet talk radio and magazine, http: //www.cloakanddagger.de (http: //www.cloakanddagger.ca). He also contributed to http: //www.rense.com and his reports appeared on many other websites. Together with Cloak and Dagger host Lenny Bloom, Skolnick further penned the Middle Finger News series. On his website, Skolnick caricatured himself as Sherlock Holmes peering through his magnifying glass. This symbol has now been transported to the covers of Dandelion's latest compilation of his writings, where it will continue to serve as a reminder of a man who consistently refused to be politically correct even when he knew the consequences of not toeing the party line, and who worked meticulously and indefatigably for the cause of justice.

Catch-22 is a satirical war novel by American author Joseph Heller. He began writing it in 1953; the novel was first published in 1961. Often cited as one of the most significant novels of the twentieth century, it uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from the points of view of different characters. The separate storylines are out of sequence so the timeline develops along with the plot.

The novel is set during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. It mainly follows the life of antihero Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Most of the events in the book occur while the fictional 256th US Army Air Squadron is based on the island of Pianosa, in the Mediterranean Sea, west of Italy, though it also covers episodes from basic training at Lowery Field in Colorado and Air Corps training in Santa Ana, CA. The novel examines the absurdity of war and military life through the experiences of Yossarian and his cohorts, who attempt to maintain their sanity while fulfilling their service requirements so that they may return home.

In 1994 Heller published a sequel, Closing Time.

Undoubtedly the “Bible” of conspiracy books, the completely revised and updated Fourth Edition landmark book is filled with information not previously disclosed. It names one of the contenders for the White House who is closely related to one of the oldest “300” families whose fortune was derived from opium trade with China, and no, it is not any of the Bush clan.

The origin of the Committee of 300 is described, how it has evolved from an opium trading company with a Royal Charter to become the de-facto secret upper-level parallel government of the United States and the world, with only Russia and China standing in opposition to it. A highly organized secret society with tentacles reaching into every level of government in the United States and indeed, the world, backed by massive financing and run by men of the highest education and intelligence, with vast resources at their disposal, manages the thousands of major political and economical and contrived situations.

In the FOURTH EDITION there is listed some very prominent men who came forward to support the existence of the “300.” One of them predicted twenty years ago that “The United States will be turned into a welfare state” and that “with the exception of Russia all nations would unite in a world alliance (The One World Government).”

Perhaps the most startling admission of the existence of the super-secret organization came from President Wilson in the last days of his presidency: “Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere, so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.” The “power” Wilson was talking about is the Committee of 300 and Wilson knew he did not dare to mention it by name.
