Ireland honours its fallen 100 years after the Easter Rising: Thousands line the streets as the President lay a wreath as part of the centenary commemoration ceremony

The poignant ceremony was among the first in a national day of events commemorating those who fought and died in the insurrection

 

15 revolutionaries were executed in 1916 for their part in an uprising against British rule, known as the Easter Rising


Nearly 4,000 Defence Forces personnel paraded through Dublin to commemorate momentous moment in Irish history


Re-enactments of events took place and President Michael Higgins laid wreath at Kilmainham Gaol, where they died


Ministers celebrated 'courage' and ideals of leaders at what was billed the largest public spectacle in Ireland's history


Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams addressed parade in Belfast, saying that the 'scourge of sectarianism must be tackled'


 

There were re-enactments of the uprising, which was followed by executions, and minister praised the courage and ideals of the men who led that revolution 100 years ago
