TWO Russian bombers had to be intercepted by US fighter jets on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, American military chiefs have revealed.

The US military said on September 11 two Russian Tupolev Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers flew close to the west coast of Alaska.

They were intercepted by a pair of Air Force F-22 stealth fighter jets, according to a statement by the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).

The Russian jets never entered US or Canadian airspace, NORAD said, but it didn't give a precise location as to how close they had come.

This marks the second time this month a pair of Russian bombers have flown close to Alaska.

On September 1, bombers belonging to Russia were intercepted by F-22 fighters after crossing into the Alaskan Air Defence Identification Zone, south of the Aleutian Islands.

Back in May, two US defence officials revealed two similar Russian bombers had come within 55 miles of Alaska's west coast.

It comes at a time of renewed tensions between Russia and NATO.

Both sides have accused the other of dangerous pilot behaviour and warned that any mid-air collisions between planes could spark a war.
